Roni: Protest against railway mismanagement to continue

Mohiuddin Roni, a student of Dhaka University, protesting against mismanagement of Bangladesh Railway yesterday said that he would not give up until the demands were met.

Roni along with several other fellow students resumed their agitation in Kamalapur Railway Station area on Friday.

However, they were barred from entering the station by security personnel, for the second consecutive day.

Roni requested the security personnel to allow them to enter the station and continue their peaceful agitation, but his requests were declined.

Later, the DU student addressed a mass gathered around him and said he along with other protesters had gone to Shahbagh intersection earlier in the day with the same intention of protesting railway’s mismanagement.

But they decided to leave the area as people were having a tough time due to traffic congestion.

Replying to a question asked by a journalist present at the railway station, Roni said that none of his six-point demands was met till Friday.

The fourth-year student of DU’s theatre and performance studies department earlier protested at Kamalapur Railway Station from July 7-19, after falling victim to the dodgy e-ticketing system of Bangladesh Railway.

On Tuesday, he marched to Rail Bhaban and submitted a memorandum, including his demands addressed to the chief of Bangladesh Railway, before issuing a 48-hour ultimatum and seeking the prime minister’s intervention.

After the 48-hour ultimatum had passed at 3:30pm on Thursday, Roni started towards Kamalapur Railway Station. Upon reaching the station entrance half an hour later, he became embroiled in an altercation with the policemen deployed there.

Even so, he positioned himself there, defying police resistance. Students of different universities were also seen accompanying Roni at the time.

Roni claimed that police and Ansar personnel had attacked the protesters at the station, which was why they took their demonstration to Shahbagh later in the evening.

He said they would stay there until their demands were met and justice was ensured over the attack.

The Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection (DNCRP), on the basis of a complaint filed by Roni, had slapped Shohoz, the ticketing partner of Bangladesh Railway, with a fine of Tk2 lakh for mismanagement in ticketing, Director General AHM Shafiquzzaman confirmed on Wednesday.
