An African lioness died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Safari Park in Gazipur on Thursday.
The lioness died at around 1am in the morning at the age of 11, according to a press release from the Ministry of Forest, Environment and Climate Change.
The lioness had been diagnosed with a disease on August 11 last year when veterinarians discovered fluid build-up in her abdomen.
After the diagnosis, the veterinary officer of the safari park continued to treat the lioness on the advice from Dr Md Rafiqul Alam, director of the Department of Surgery and Obstetrics, Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Mymensingh, and former curator of Mirpur Zoo ABM Shahid Ullah.
The lioness later developed problems in her left leg, shortness of breath, and bleeding from the mouth.
On February 2, 2022, at approximately 4:15 pm, the lioness’s condition began to deteriorate.
Veterinary Surgeon Dr Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman attempted to treat the lioness but could not prevent her death.
As many as 11 zebras at the safari park have lost their lives to disease and infections over the past month.
