The Awami League backed mayoral candidate Talukder Abdul Khaleque (boat) has become the mayor for the third time in Khulna City Corporation (KCC) elections.
Returning officer Alauddin announced the election results in the hall of Khulna District Art Academy from Monday afternoon.
Among the 289 centres, Khaleque secured 154,825 (60.4%) votes. His nearest competitor Bangladesh Islami Andolan's Abdul Awal (hand Fan) received 60,064 (23.4%) votes.
According to unofficial results, Jatiya Party's Shafiqul Islam Madhu (plough) bagged 18,074 votes, Independent candidate SM Shafiqur Rahman (clock) got 17,218 and Jaker Party's SM Sabbir Hossain (rose) got 6,096 votes.
The voter turnout was 47.88%.
The total vote centres in the KCC polls is 289.
In the KCC polls, five candidates are vying for the mayoral post. They are AL-backed Talukder Abdul Khaleque (boat), Jatiya Party's Shafiqul Islam Modhu (plough), Bangladesh Islami Andolon's Moulana Abdul Awal (hand Fan), Zaker Party's SM Sabbir Hossain (rose) and independent candidate Shafiqur Rahman Mushfiq (table clock).
Voting in Khulna and Barisal city elections ended at 4pm in an overall peaceful manner on Monday with reports of isolated incidents of violence in some places.
There were no reports of violence in Khulna.
