A passenger was held at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport, on Sunday morning, along with 1kg gold, three mobiles, and two laptops that were smuggled illegally from Dubai.
The detainee was identified as Abdul Karim Sajan, a resident of Feni's Parshuram area, officials from the National Security Intelligence (NSI) confirmed.
According to the NSI, Abdul Karim Sajan arrived in Chittagong at around 8:10am on Fly Dubai's FZ-563 flight.
Due to his suspicious behaviour, the NSI and CIID conducted a search on him.During the search, authorities discovered 12 bar-shaped gold pieces weighing 746 grams, one bar weighing 116.5 grams, and additional gold ornaments weighing 100 grams hidden behind the door hinge of his bag.
The total weight of the recovered gold is 963 grams, estimated to be worth Tk82,32,433 on the market.
In addition to the gold, an iPhone-14, a Redmi phone, a Google Pixel phone, and two laptops were also retrieved from the passenger's bag.
The total value of the confiscated items amounts to Tk85,35,433.
Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Additional Director General Bashir Ahmed said that Abdul Karim Sajan was held, and the illegally imported goods were seized.
He also said: "He attempted to evade a significant amount of duty by illegally importing these items. Further legal actions are being taken against him."
