Minister: No scope for caretaker government

There is no scope for reinstating the caretaker government system before the next parliamentary polls, says Law Minister Anisul Huq.

He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a seminar in a Dhaka hotel on Thursday.

The minister said that a caretaker government cannot return as it is illegal as per the country's constitution.

The BNP has been rallying for a caretaker government, saying that the party will not go to the national polls unless there is a non-partisan government.

However, several Awami League lawmakers have reiterated that the caretaker government will not return.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on September 14 that the BNP should work for the people instead of “shedding crocodile tears for the elections under the caretaker government.”

Meanwhile, Information Minister Hasan Mahmud said that the BNP’s dream of restoring the polls-time government will go in vain.

In 1994, Awami League spearheaded a campaign for installing a non-partisan caretaker government to oversee free and fair polls and forced BNP to accept it in 1996 in the face of a fierce movement.

The caretaker government system was abolished through the 15th amendment in 2011 as the Supreme Court struck down the 13th amendment to the constitution as illegal. The last two general elections were held under the Awami League-led government.
