Road crashes kill 5, including children, in 3 districts

A total of five people, including two children, were killed in separate road accidents in Bogra Jessore and Barisal districts on Sunday.

In Jessore, two minor children were crushed under the wheels of a tractor trolley in Sadar upazila on Sunday morning, say police.

The deceased were identified as Jahia Khatun, 4, and her cousin Abu Huraira, 2, of Jirat village of the upazila, reports UNB.

When Jahia's father Kamal Hossain started the tractor trolley to carry soil, he did not notice the children were behind the vehicle, said Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Jessore Kotwali Model police station.

Kamal said: “The vehicle got stuck while moving backwards. When I went to check, I found the children crushed under the wheels.”

“I could not hear their screams due to the loud noise of the tractor,” he added in a choked voice.

The bodies were handed over to the families without any post-mortem as they did not lodge any complaint, said the OC.

In Bogra, two passengers were killed and two injured when a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw rammed behind a truck at Nandigram in Bogra.

They died on Sunday morning after being admitted to Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College hospital.

The accident took place on the Bogra-Nato highway in the Ranbagha area of the upazila on Saturday night, Kunderhat police station OC Shahidul Islam confirmed.

The deceased were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Altaf Hossain, 60, and Moslema Khatun, 40.

Police and relatives said that the driver of the auto-rickshaw lost control and ran into the parked truck from behind. The auto-rickshaw overturned and four passengers were injured.

Members of the Fire Service rescued them and admitted them to the hospital. Aftaf and Moslema died on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment there.

OC Shahidul Islam said that the driver and helper fled with the truck immediately after the accident.

“Efforts are underway to identify them. The auto-rickshaw is in police custody. Police are preparing a case in this regard,” he added.

In Barisal, a college student died and ten others were injured when a bus fell into a ditch after colliding with a truck at Sakaria brickfield area under Amtali upazila of Barguna district on Barishal-Kuakata highway early on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as Muhammad Riyad, 20, of Gournadi upazila of Barisal.

He was an 11th-grade student at Fazilatunnessa College in the Hazaribagh area of Dhaka.

Six of the injured are undergoing treatment at Patuakhali and Amtali Upazila Health Complex, police said.

AKM Mizanur Rahman, officer in charge of Amtali police station, said a Rajib Paribahan bus heading to Kuakata from Dhaka collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction.

At that time, the bus upturned and fell into a roadside ditch.

Eleven passengers including the bus and truck drivers were injured. On receiving the information, the fire service personnel and police rushed to the spot and rescued the bus, truck and passengers. Both vehicles were seized by police.

Among the injured passengers, severely injured Riyad was sent to Barisal Shere-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.
