IUB hosts national round of fifth Astronomy Olympiad

The Department of Physical Sciences (DPS) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has organized the National Round of the fifth Bangladesh Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (BDOAA).

High school students from grades 9-12 from across the country participated in this competition on May 21, said a press release on Tuesday.

This event followed the regional round held on April 22. 

A number of students selected from among the winners of this competition will represent Bangladesh in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA), scheduled to be held in Georgia in August.

The prize-giving ceremony was held in the presence of Dr Khan Asad, general secretary of BDOAA, Dr Asma Begum, associate professor at IUB, and Dr Talal Ahmed Chowdhury, assistant professor at the University of Dhaka and treasurer of BDOAA. 

The guests also enlightened the students about the current fields of study related to astronomy and astrophysics in IUB and Bangladesh.

Dr Talal talked about gravitational waves, black holes and dark matter while Dr Khan introduced the opportunities of studying astronomy at IUB. 

The participants were also given a tour of the IUB campus.
