The US chapter of the Awami League and its affiliated bodies will organize a rally in front of the World Bank headquarters in Washington DC on the day of the inauguration of the Padma Bridge in Bangladesh.
The rally will be held at 3pm on June 24 (local time) as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to inaugurate the Padma Bridge at 10am on June 25.
Dr Siddiqur Rahman, the Awami League's US unit president, and Abdus Samad Azad, the acting general secretary, announced the programme on Monday.
In Bangladesh, the bridge authorities have formed 18 preparatory committees and sub-committees to celebrate the completion of the mega project.
The committees will undertake a massive campaign with an eye to the inauguration program, and ensure security, technical support and other relevant tasks.
The construction of the bridge began in November 2015 with the aim of connecting the country’s south-western region with the capital via road and rail.
The project cost rose to Tk30,193 crore in 2021 after several revisions.
To develop connectivity with the road and rail network for the south-western regions of the country, the government’s expenditure is over Tk80,000 crore to date.
