President M Abdul Hamid yesterday paid rich tributes to the memory of internationally reputed nuclear scientist Dr MA Wazed Miah, husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on the occasion of his 13th death anniversary to be observed on Monday.
He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul of Dr Miah.
In a message on the eve of the day, Abdul Hamid recalled that Dr Miah had made notable contributions to the field of atomic research during his lifetime.
He served the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission in different capacities successfully, the president said.
Abdul Hamid added that the area of Dr Miah's research was wide, covering issues like Fundamental Interaction and Particle Physics, Nuclear and Reactor Physics, Solid State Physics, Electromagnetism, Health and Radiation Physics, Renewable Energy and so on.
Abdul Hamid said “Jatiya Samannita Unnayan Foundation” was established in 1997 at the advice and patronage of Dr Miah. He would remain a source of inspiration to the future generation for his works.
President Abdul Hamid said Dr Miah had also contributed to the national politics silently side by side with carrying out scientific research.
He recalled that Dr Miah had been arrested during the movement against Aiyub Khan's military rule in 1962.
Abdul Hamid said that Dr Miah had tied the knot with Sheikh Hasina, the elder daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on November 17 in 1967, and stood beside the family during the Liberation War in 1971.
