Tangail 7 MP Akabbar Hossain passes away

Ruling Awami League lawmaker from Tangail 7 constituency Md Akabbar Hossain died on Tuesday after suffering a stroke.

The 65-year-old freedom fighter breathed his last at Combined Military Hospital around 2pm, his wife Jharna Akhter confirmed.

He had been suffering from several health complications including kidney issues for a while.

President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of the Awami League leader, who was also the chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Road Transport and Bridges Ministry.

In separate messages, they prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

Previously, Akabbar Hossain suffered a stroke on October 16 and had been undergoing treatment at Anwar Khan Modern Hospital in the capital. He was later transferred to the CMH. 

His namaz-e-janaza will be held at Mirzapur Pilot High School grounds on Wednesday.

Born in Mirzapur on July 12, 1965, Akabbar Hossain was elected as the ruling party lawmaker from Tangail 7 (Mirzapur) constituency in 2001, 2008, 2014 and 2018.

In 1973, while studying at Titumir College, he served as Chhatra League’s college unit general secretary.  

He completed graduation in 1977 and his masters in 1978 from Dhaka University.

In 1976, he was elected the general secretary of Chhatra League’s Dhaka University Mohsin Hall unit. He was elected the president of the same unit after two years.

In 1990, Akabbar Hossain was elected the upazila parishad chairman of Mirzapur. 

He served as the party’s Mirzapur unit president until his death.
