Bangladesh records 10 more Omicron cases

Bangladesh reported 10 more cases of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus on Thursday.

Germany’s Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) announced the detection of the 10 new cases on Thursday night.

As stated by the GISAID website, the new patients infected with Omicron include seven females and three males. All of them were Dhaka residents and aged between 18 and 65.

There was no data on the travel history of the new patients.

With the latest infections, the total number of Omicron cases in the country now stands at 20.

The samples were collected from the patients between December 14 and January 3.

The Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (iDesHi), the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b) and the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) submitted those genome sequence data.

In the last two weeks, more than double the number of Covid-19 patients was identified in Dhaka. Out of 1,140 people identified in the last 24 hours, Dhaka division reported 978 cases.

Bangladesh is currently seeing a surge in Covid-19 cases as the health authorities logged 4,920 infections in a week.

The daily infection rate also nearly doubled in just three days. The test positivity jumped to 4.86% on Thursday from 2.91% on Sunday.
