Rights activists to sue Channel i, Barrister Sumon over derogatory remarks on disabled people

Rights activists have announced to file a case against Channel i as well as the makers and actors of a drama for allegedly promoting derogatory messages about impaired persons through the show.

Also, Barrister Syed Sayedul Haque Sumon is going to be sued in another case for reportedly making hurtful comparisons regarding people with disabilities on a talk show on the same channel.

Several organizations that work for persons with disabilities made the announcements in a virtual press conference organized by Manusher Jonno Foundation (MJF) on Tuesday.

Legal action will be taken against Channel i, a private TV channel, for airing the Eid special tele-fiction titled "Ghotona Shotto", which described disabilities as a “result of sins committed by parents”, under Section 37 (4) of the Protection of the Rights of the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2013.

Meanwhile, a case will be filed against Barrister Sumon for describing the deplorable state of football in the country as a "disabled boy" on a talk show on the same channel on July 11.

Speakers at the press conference said such comparison was extremely humiliating for persons with disabilities.

Advocate Rezaul Karim Siddiqui will lodge the two cases on behalf of aggrieved handicapped persons.

As many as 350 organizations that work with and for people with disabilities have expressed their support for the legal moves.
