A court on Wednesday placed Hefazat-e-Islam Dhaka city unit Vice President Mawlana Korban Ali on seven-day remand in a case lodged over the mayhem in the capital’s Paltan area in 2013.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid passed the order as police produced Korban, also a joint secretary general of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, before the court and pleaded to place him on 10-day remand.
Police arrested Korban Ali from the capital's Basabo area at around 5:30pm on April 20.
Hefazat-e-Islam laid seige on capital’s Shapla Chattar area on May 5, 2013, unleashing inexpressible atrocities in and around the capital.
They vandalized hundreds of vehicles, shops and offices, setting many of them on fire. They even cut down hundreds of trees grown on the road dividers and used them as barricades to obstruct law enforcement officials.
