A woman tried commit suicide in Jatrabari, Dhaka, by pouring kerosene all over her body and setting herself on fire.
The incident took place on Friday afternoon. The woman was identified as Sharmin, 20.
Her relatives rescued her in a critical condition and brought her to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The doctor on duty said that 90% of her body had been burnt and she was in a critical condition.
Md Bachchu Mia, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost, confirmed the matter.
Sharmin's cousin, Afroza, said she was the daughter of Abdul Mannan Bepari of Dholaipar Koborsthan Road in Jatrabari.
She said her cousin had attmepted suicide due to having a troubled marriage.
According to Afroza, Sharmin got married to Ramzan, a pickup driver of Kutubkhali, three years ago.
The couple had a son, who died due to illness. Sharmin was also sick for a long time. She had been admitted to the DMCH due to her illness and recently returned home.
During her stay at the DMCH, Ramzan never visited her at the hospital or asked about her health. The duo would frequently quarrel about this over phone, said Afroza.
She added that Sharmin lived with her parents, and her husband lived in Kutubkhali.
Afroza also said Sharmin’s husband used to talk to her in a very vulgar language on the phone, which Sharmin could not bear.
She thinks Sharmin became upset due to her husband’s verbal abuse and tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire.
