MC College Gang Rape: Accused Tarekul shaved his beard, head to avoid arrest

Tarekul Islam alias Tarek, one of the accused in the gang rape of a woman at MC College in Sylhet, changed his appearance to avoid arrest by shaving his beard and head.

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested him from Garma village in Sunamganj’s Derai upazila at around 6pm on Tuesday.

Obain Rakhain, assistant superintendent of police and media officer of RAB 9, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

According to RAB sources, a RAB team led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Abdullah and Sub-Inspector Kajal Dev arrested Tarekul, then took him to Derai police station at around 8pm.  

The accused was later brought to Sylhet in a police vehicle.

A press briefing will be held in Sylhet regarding the arrest, said Ltd Commander Foisal Ahmed, who was present at Derai police station.

Jogdal Union Parishad Chairman Shibli Baigh, who was present during the arrest, said Tarekul was browsing his mobile phone at the time of arrest. “He was wearing a lungi and there was no cloth on his body,” the chairman said.

“Tarek had been staying at Patiargaon village in Jogdal union. On Tuesday afternoon, he changed his location and went to Garma,” he added.

Including Tarekul, all six identified accused in the case have been arrested, along with two unnamed accused.

The other named accused are: Mahbubur Rahman Rony, M Saifur Rahman, Arjun Laskar, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, and Robiul Islam. Among them, Rony, Saifur, Arjun and Rabiul, along with two suspects - Rajon Miah and Md Ainuddin - have been placed on five-day remand each.
