Suspected thief stabs woman to death in Dhaka

A suspected thief has stabbed a housewife to death as she found him at her flat in Dhaka.

The incident took place in the Sabujbag area on Monday night.

The victim, Jannatul, 30, used to live with her husband and their lone child on the third floor flat of the six-storey building.

Police, meanwhile, arrested the suspect Monir who worked as a construction worker of the building several months ago.

Sabujbag police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mahbub Alam said Monir intruded into the flat through a pocket gate around 8:30pm when the victim was in her bedroom.

"Monir stayed in the kitchen and collected a knife from there. When the woman went to the kitchen, she encountered him and locked into an argument over his intrusion.

"At one stage, Monir stabbed her in the back six to seven times and lastly in the throat to confirm her death," the OC said.

Hearing her scream, another woman from the second floor approached the flat and knocked at the door.

She, however, returned to her own flat on getting no response from the victim.

In the meantime, Monir came out of the flat and hid himself on the under-construction fifth floor of the building in order to escape at a convenient time.

After returning home, the victim's husband also did not not get any response while knocking at the door.

When he entered the flat using the pocket gate, he found Jannatul lying in a pool of blood, the police official said.

Being informed, police reached the spot around 10pm and traced the suspect following the trail of blood along the stairs.

"We found him [Monir] on the fifth floor and apprehended him," said the OC.

The body was sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

The process of filing a case is underway.
