Md Shafiqul Islam, elder brother of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam, has passed away.
He breathed his last early Tuesday in Dhaka, according to a media statement. He was 82 years old.
He was the managing director of Islam Garments Ltd & Group.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, siblings, grandchildren, and numerous well wishers.
Shafiqul was born on December 29, 1938 in Lalpur village in Comilla district.
His father was late Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, and his mother was late Majeda Khatun.
He got his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 1957, and a master’s degree in Structural Engineering in 1965 from Ahsanullah Engineering College, now known as Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet).
He joined government service after finishing his education. In 1965, he was project director for the Rooppur Nuclear Project.
For a long time, he worked as an engineering consultant on this project and contributed as a consultant to some of the largest construction projects in the country.
In 1986, a pioneer in the current garment industry, he founded Islam Garments Ltd with his younger brother Atiqul Islam.
His other siblings, apart from Mayor Atiqul, are also successful in their own fields.
His brother, Md Tafazzul Islam is a retired Chief Justice and gave the final verdict in the Bangabandhu murder case.
Another brother, Lt Gen (Retired) Md Mainul Islam is the former director general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
