A senior government official has termed wage discrimination as a major cause of migration from the countryside to urban areas.
Differences in earnings have compelled rural people to migrate to urban areas, said Posts and Telecommunications Division Secretary Nur-Ur-Rahman.
He made the remarks while speaking at a workshop on “Amar Gram Amar Shohor (my village, my city)", organized by Rural Development Academy (RDA), at CIRDAP in Dhaka yesterday.
“A lack of job opportunities is not the only reason behind internal migration. Rather it is related to discrimination in urban and rural areas,” he said.
Against such a background, he said, the present government had initiated the Amar Gram Amar Shohor project to ensure that all facilities were enjoyed by citizens in rural areas. He added: “We have to make infrastructural or systemic development by preserving nature in all the villages.”
“If we want to take full benefit of 5G network, we have to connect it with the rural people,” the secretary said.

Earlier, RDA Director General Aminul Islam presented the recommendations made following a research conducted by the research institute.
The research was based on 17 different social development issues, and 17 research teams consisting of 38 researchers collected data through a random selection of villages in Chakpathaliya in Sherpur upazilas of Bogra district.
Khandekar Anwarul Islam, secretary of the cabinet division, instructed the planning ministry officials to consider the research findings before making any plan for rural development.
Secretaries for establishing a coordination committee in cabinet
Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare Mohammad Jainul Bari said that lack of coordination among the ministries was one of the important obstacles to ensure full use of allocated money.
More coordinated measures were needed to achieve SDGs within 2030, and complete the mega projects of 2041, said Secretary Nur-ur-Rahman.
Secretary of Planning Division Nurul Amin was also present at the program.
