They arrived in two microbuses and one CNG auto rickshaw. The 20-25 family members included Ripon’s parents and brothers.6:40pm- Two ambulances arrive at the jail premises. 6:36pm- Senior Jail Superintendent of Kashimpur Central Jail Mizanur Rahman says that preparations for the execution of Mufti Hannan and his associate Bipul were being undertaken by Kashimpur Central Jail officials. Harkat-ul Jihad al-Islami Bangladesh (HujiB) members attempted to assassinate Anwar Choudhury, the then UK high commissioner in Dhaka, at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal in Sylhet on May 21, 2004. Choudhury escaped death, but three people were killed in the attack which left over 70 others injured.A Sylhet court on December 23, 2008 sentenced Hannan and his aides Delwar Hossain Ripon and Sharif Shahedul Bipul to death and two others to life-time imprisonment for their role in the attack. The High Court upheld the sentences in February 2016.Later in the same month, the death row convicts appealed to the Appellate Division but to no avail, as the death penalty was upheld there as well. The full verdict was published on January 17.The death warrant was read out to Mufti Hannan on February 6 and his review petition against the sentence was rejected on March 19.On March 21, the Appellate Division released the full text of its verdict confirming the death penalties.The HujiB militant group was formed in 1992 and claims to have carried out at least 14 attacks, killing more than 100 people in the pursuit of “establishing Shariah law in Bangladesh.” The group later split into three factions.The militant leader, who was reportedly blessed by the then BNP-Jamaat government, was arrested along with his wife and four children from the capital’s Badda area on October 31, 2005.Mufti Hannan also carries death sentence for the blasts at Ramna Batamul during the Pohela Boishakh celebrations in 2001, in which 10 people were killed. HujiB claims the festival is un-Islamic.He was given life-term imprisonment for the attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2000.The trial in the much-talked case filed over the August 21 grenade attack in 2004 is now underway.
