Employees strike as BCC fails to pay salary

Barisal City Corporation employees called strike and organised rally on Monday demanding their due salaries of five months. According to Dipok Lal Mridha, BCC conservancy officer, 542 permanent and 1600 temporary employees are protesting in demand of their due salaries and provident funds. He said: “The employees received no salary for five months and no deposit of provident fund for 32 months. BCC authorities assured employees about payment in February. But they did not keep their words.” Seeking anonymity another employee of BCC said: “We are struggling to survive in our everyday lives and now it is not tolerable anymore. The strike will continue till receive what is demanded.” Md Wahiduzzaman, chief executive officer of BCC, said: “We could not earn enough revenue in last few months which caused the failure of providing monthly payments. However, we are trying our best to provide at least two months of due salaries as soon as possible.”
