Bangladeshi photographer wins Lucie Award

Mohammad Rakibul Hasan has been awarded the 2018 Discovery of the Year Award for his photo series "I am Rohingya" at the 16th Annual Lucie Awards. 

The award ceremony was hosted at the Carnegie Hall in New York City, USA on Sunday, October 28.

Mohammad Rakibul Hasan is a documentary photographer and visual artist.

He is currently pursuing an MA in Photography at Falmouth University. 

Rakibul holds an undergraduate certificate in History of Art from Oxford University. He pursued a postgraduate diploma in Photojournalism from Ateneo de Manila University, and also graduated in Film & Video Production from UBS Film School at the University of Sydney. 

He has been nominated for many international awards and has won several photographic competitions worldwide. His photographs have been published and exhibited internationally. 

He is based in Dhaka and represented by Redux Pictures, USA.

Internationally renowned Bangladeshi photographer, academic and activist Shahidul Alam has been awarded the 2018 Humanitarian Award at the Lucie Awards.

The Lucie Awards is an annual event honouring the greatest achievements in photography hosted by the Lucie Foundation. The photography community from around the globe pays tribute to the most outstanding people in the field. 

Shahidul wins Humanitarian Award

Shahidul Alam was presented the award for his extraordinary contribution in photography, activism and society. Eminent professor and scholar Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak accepted the award on Shahidul’s behalf.

Earlier, on August 5, Shahidul Alam was picked up from his residence. He was subsequently arrested on charges of using electronic media to instigate disorder in the country—and spreading fabricated information and rumours via social media, on August 6.

Shahidul was sent to jail on August 12.
