Two Bangladesh Navy sailors were killed and six others including two officers were injured following an explosion during test firing in the Bay of Bengal on Thursday.
The incident took place on board first attack craft BNS Titas during a naval exercise held off the coast of Chittagong around 2pm.
Navy sources said a cartridge had become stuck in the barrel of one the 20mm guns of the Sea Dolphin Class ship and exploded, causing the casualties.
The fatally wounded sailors were identified by the Inter Services Public Relation (ISPR) Directorate as petty officers MM Rahman and M Motaleb.
“The injured were brought to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka for necessary treatment,” ISPR Director Lt Col Alamgir Kabir told the Dhaka Tribune.
The identities of the injured navy personnel were still to be confirmed by late Thursday, although ISPR Assistant Director Rashadul Alam Khan said more details would be provided to the media later.
BNS Titas belongs to the 101 PCS Squadron of the navy.
