Navigability problems have been somewhat resolved on the Padma River in Munshiganj and more ferries were operating on Sunday than before on the Shimulia – Kathalbari crossing.
Including one ro-ro, 15 ferries are operating along the crossing, which lies along the main roadway to South Bengal from Dhaka.
Yesterday afternoon the ferry terminal authorities said about a 100 vehicles were waiting to cross the river at Shimulia.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation Deputy General Manager Shah Md Khaled said navigability problems at the mouth of the channel were making it difficult to operate the dump ferries but 15 ferries including one ro-ro were running nevertheless.
He said at passenger traffic was low at the launch terminal.
“There are 87 vessels operating on this route, but at the moment one of them is out of commission. Right now the terminal is open till 10pm instead of the usual 8pm because of Eid,” he said.
