Members of the media have demanded the arrest of attackers, regardless of political affiliation, who assaulted on-duty journalists during this week’s student protests.
They expressed their indignation at a human chain they formed on Friday at Shahbagh. They reproached law enforcement for their lack of initiative to arrest the attackers.
At least seven photojournalists were assaulted at Dhaka’s Jigatala and Science Laboratory areas last Sunday. They were covering the student protest for safe roads.

The injured include: AM Ahad of international news agency the Associated Press (AP), Zawad of the Daily Janakantha, Palash of Banik Barta, Rimon of US-based Zuma Press, Sharif of Dainik Naya Diganta, freelancer Rahat, and Enamul Hasan, a photography student of Pathsala South Asian Media Institute.
No-one has been arrested thus far.
The journalists described the assaults as an “attack on democracy.”
They alleged that the attackers were not being arrested, despite video evidence of the perpetrators, because of the government’s lack of goodwill.
