Students have demanded that the government implement the parliamentary panel's recommendations to extend the age limit to enter government jobs to 35 years—and the retirement age to 65.
The Bangladesh General Students’ Council voiced the demand at a human chain, formed at the National Press Club, on Saturday.
The council’s Joint Convener Harun-Or-Rashid said the government will have to implement the recommendations before its tenure ends.
“Before the ninth national election, the government assured us they will increase the existing age limit but we have not seen the result yet. So we urge the government to implement the recommendation before the 11th national election,” he said.
Previously, on June 27, a parliamentary standing committee recommended extending the age for recruitment into government jobs to be set to 35 years – from the existing 30 years – and the retirement age from 59 years to 65.
The committee asked the Ministry of Public Administration to take necessary steps to revise the matter.
The retirement age for public servants, fixed after the country’s independence, was originally set to 57 years.
Earlier this year, college and university students held demonstrations for several months demanding the extension of recruitment age for government jobs to 35 years.
During her first term in office in December 2011, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cleared a proposal allowing public servants to work till the age of 59, and public servants with a freedom fighters' certificate to work till 61.
