Javed Patwari made new police chief

Mohammad Javed Patwari will become the new inspector general of Bangladesh Police when AKM Shahidul Hoque steps down on January 31, the Home Ministry’s Public Security Division announced yesterday. Javed has been heading police’s special branch as the additional IGP for nine years and was described as an “honest, intelligent and hard-working official” by Anti Terrorism Unit Chief, Additional IGP Mohammad Shafiqul Islam. “I believe he will become more successful as the inspector general and will make the security force friendlier and more helpful to the people of the country,” Shafiqul told the Dhaka Tribune. Javed, hailing from Chandpur sadar, completed his MA from Dhaka University before joining the police service through the sixth Bangladesh Civil Service exam. Before heading the special branch, he worked as the special superintendent of police in the Criminal Investigation Department from 1996 to 1999. He played an important role in collecting information for “Karagare Rojnamcha” - a book chronicling Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s time behind bars. After taking charge of SB, Javed took initiatives to preserve thousands of classified reports on Bangabandhu from 1948 to 1971 kept at the special branch’s archive.
