Parliament opens Sunday

The 19th session of the 10th Parliament resumes on Sunday after a 45-day recess. President Abdul Hamid will address the first session of the New Year in line with Article 73 (2) of the Constitution. Before the House goes into session at 4pm, the business advisory committee of parliament will meet with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair to fix the duration and businesses of the session. The duration of this session is likely to be long as Parliament will see discussions over the thanksgiving motion on the President's speech alongside other businesses. At the beginning of the session, the House will adopt a condolence motion over the death of two sitting MPs - Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque elected from Brahmanbaria 1 constituency and Golam Mostafa Ahmed elected from Gaibandha 1. The two Awami League MPs passed away on December 16 and 19 last respectively. There will be discussions on the condolence motion in the House as well. As per the country's parliamentary tradition, the businesses of the House are suspended for the first day after adopting the condolence motion. On December 20 last, President Abdul Hamid convened the session. The 18th session of the 10th parliament was prorogued on November 23 last.
