Report: Road crashes killed 416 across Bangladesh in January

The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) blamed rush driving and unskilled drivers, among others, for these accidents. During the same period, 1,012 people were injured in road crashes on highways, national highways, inter-district roads and regional roads. In December, 281 accidents on the road killed 332 people and injured 654 more. Deaths on the road rose by 25% in January, the committee said in a statement on Thursday. Among January's victims, 54 were women and 55 others were children. The information was collected from 20 national dailies, 10 regional newspapers, eight online newspapers and news agencies. NCPSRR General Secretary Ashis Kumar Dey said they identified four key factors that pushed up the accidents. They are sudden rise in the number of three-wheelers and locally-mechanised vehicles on roads, rush driving in dense fog, unskilled motorcycle drivers and lack of awareness among pedestrians and drivers of small vehicles.
