Prof Afzalur Rahman new NICVD director

He was earlier the head of the Cardiovascular Department of the NICVD, reports BSS.
Prof Afzalur has been promoted to the post of director (acting) of the NICVD through a notification issued by the Ministry of Health on December 28, 2016.
He replaced former NICVD director Prof Abu Azam. He earlier served as the head of the Cardiovascular Department at Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital.
Prof Afzalur is now a visiting consultant of the Cardiovascular Department of the 250-bed Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Memorial KPJ Specialised Hospital in Gazipur.
He is the elected president of Bangladesh Society of Cardiovascular Intervention (BSCI) and the chairman and course director of Bangladesh Intervention Therapeutics (BIT).
He was recently appointed as the international governor of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), a leading organisation for cardiologists and researchers in the world.
Prof Afzalur, who was born in a respected family in Boraigram, Natore, obtained MBBS degree from Rajshahi Medical College in 1984. He secured MD and cardiology degrees from the NICVD in 1992.
In cooperation with Alabama Medical Centre at Birmingham in the United States, he did his PhD on cardiology under Dhaka University in 2004.
Later, he obtained FRCP degree from Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, the UK and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Prof Afzalur also earned the FACC Fellowship from the USA.
