Community Policing Day to be observed on October 28

Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque has said that Community Policing Day 2017 will be observed on Saturday, October 28, as the day is observed on the last Saturday of October. The IGP made the announcement at a press conference organised by the Police Headquarters at 2pm on Thursday. “Community policing is a voluntary task. We want it to be all-party. We always want good people on the Community Police Committee,” Shahidul said. “Community policing aims to engage people in mutual cooperation and partnership. This helps in countering terrorism, drug peddling, neighborhood crime and other social problems,” he added. The IGP also said that a community policing system is present in many countries of the world. “We want a large number of people to join the community police. There are now 958,004 members on 40,908 committees for community policing all over the Bangladesh,” he said. The IGP added that those who contribute to community policing will be rewarded in the future. When asked about the presence of a large number of government officials in the community police, IGP Shahidul said: “We want it to be all-party. But if no one comes, then there is nothing to do.” The IGP also denied having any information on community police members allegedly being involved in criminal activity. “If we receive a complaint, then we will investigate the matter,” the IGP said. Crime is a disease. Anyone can be infected. Anyone can commit crimes in any community. For example, some detectives have been arrested in Cox's Bazar for committing crimes, and for this reason legal action has been taken against them. Whatever the criminal, action will be taken against him,” IGP Shahidul added.
