CEC: No army in Narayanganj city polls

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad has ruled out any possibility of army deployment in Narayanganj during the upcoming city corporation polls, as the law and order is normal there. “Presently, no such situation has arisen that requires the army deployment during the polls,” he said on Saturday while talking to reporters at National Economic Council (NEC) at Agargaon in the capital after a meeting with officials of Home Ministry and law enforcing agencies over of Narayanganj City and District Council elections. Several issues regarding the NCC elections on December 22 were discussed at the meeting. The CEC told the media that the law enforcement agencies were well aware of current law and order situation and they were capable of dealing with any unexpected situation during the elections. “Police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will be on duty during the polls and if necessary, actions will be taken immediately upon any information of violating electoral rules, manipulating election and vote rigging,” he said. Selina Hayat Ivy, the ruling party-backed candidate, and Shakhawat Hossain Khan, the BNP-backed candidate, are going to contest with their respective party symbols for the mayoral position of Narayanganj City Corporation.
