Flight attendants' uniforms too sexy for Malaysian MPs

Two Malaysian MPs have criticized the uniforms worn by flight attendants of AirAsia and Firefly, two of the country’s budget airlines, as too revealing. According to the New Straits Times, Senator Datuk Abdullah Mat Yasim, a division chief of Malaysian political party Umno, made the comment at the upper house of the Malaysian parliament, Dewan Negara, on Monday. Abdullah claimed the uniforms were not only revealing but could also arouse passengers, particularly younger travelers. “The uniforms do not reflect the status of Islam as the official religion of the Federation as enshrined in the Malaysian Constitution,” he added. However, he said the uniforms worn by flight attendants of Malindo airlines were acceptable, as they covered “sensitive areas” despite being body-hugging. The senator urged the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) to look into the issue while discussing the MAVCOM (Amendment) Bill 2017. Abdullah drew laughter from the crowd when he said his wife worried whenever he travelled on the aforementioned airlines, but his statements were supported by Dewan Negara Deputy President Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Halim Abd Samad. “This is a good topic that many people can relate to as they always take flights,” the deputy president said as quoted by New Straits Times. This is the second time in recent memory that the issue of flight attendants uniforms has come up in the Malaysian parliament, after Kelantan Umno Secretary Senator Datuk Hanafi Mamat suggested shariah-compliant uniforms be instituted in the previous week.
