The election is assumed to be a tough triangular competition involving PTI, PPP and PML-N

At least two people were gunned down at a polling station in the Kotli district of Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, as polling for 45 seats of its legislative assembly started on Sunday, reports Dawn.

The two are Zaheer Ahmed and Ramzan, who police said were the activists of the riling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).

They were shot during a brawl between their party colleagues and the activists of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) around 9:15am at the Mithi Jand polling station.

Ahmed was killed on the spot and Ramzan died on the way to the hospital.

The votes which will see 45 directly elected is assumed to be a tough triangular competition involving the two parties and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The assembly has 53 seats in total, including five reserved for women and three meant for technocrats.

There are over 3.2 million eligible voters who can elect the assembly members for a five-year term.

The PTI has nominated candidates for all the 45 constituencies, while PML-N and PPP each issued tickets to candidates for 44 seats.

Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), the radical Islamist party which was banned in April by the Pakistan government for its violent activities, is contesting on 40 seats.

The last general election for the assembly was held in July 2016 and won by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
