West Bengal BJP leader to Modi: Protect Hindus in Bangladesh

Suvendu Adhikari, opposition leader of the state's legislative assembly, said that vandals are habituated in targeting the minority community

The Bharatiya Janta Party's (BJP) leader in West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari has called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps for the protection of Hindus in Bangladesh over the reported attacks of venues of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the Hindus.

"The notorious vandals are habituated in targeting the 'Sanatan' minority community of Bangladesh," he said in a letter to Modi on Thursday.

“This time the religious fanatics took to the streets to vandalise several Durga Puja pandals and various temples too. Presently the condition of Sanatan people living in Bangladesh is very miserable,” he added.

Adhikari, who is the leader of the opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, said that relatives of Hindu minorities who have escaped from Bangladesh to West Bengal over “inhuman atrocities” are making frantic calls to stand in support of the Hindu community.

He claimed that the desecration of idols ahead of Durga Puja, is an orchestrated attack on Sanatan Bengali community.

In a separate tweet, Adhikari urged Modi, Indian home minister Amit Shah and others concerned to take up the “painful and shameful issue with the Bangladeshi authorities diplomatically, and support the Sanatani Bengalis in this times of distress.”

On Wednesday, tensions erupted among a faction of locals after news broke on social media about the alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Durga Puja mandap on the bank of Nanuar Dighi leading to the vandalism of several puja pandals and idols.

At one stage, the situation began getting out of hand and riots started spreading to a number of puja mandaps in the adjacent areas.

Following the incident, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in 22 districts, including Chittagong, Comilla, Narsingdi and Munshiganj districts to assist the civil administration.
