Thousands of people including activists, local politicians and businessmen were allegedly detained by the Indian government when it moved to revoke the special status of Indian-administered Kashmir in August 2019.

In response to critics slamming the move as draconian, the government said it was essential to maintain law and public order in the region.

"None of us can forget the insult and humiliation we faced on that day. And now we all have to remember what the federal government did on August 5 - illegally and undemocratically. What they took away from us, we have to take it back," said Ms Mufti in an audio message posted on Twitter after her release.

Two other former chief ministers, Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah, were also released in March.

In August 2019, India revoked Kashmir’s special status in a bid to fully integrate its only Muslim-majority region with the rest of the country, the most far-reaching political move on the troubled Himalayan territory in nearly seven decades.
