The North East Students’ Organization (NESO) called on India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiu to press for their demand of implementation of a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in all the Northeast Indian states and withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, among others.

A 25-member delegation led by NESO Advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya submitted an eight-point charter of demands to the Indian Home Minister and Minister of State for Home Affairs at the ministry at Delhion Thursday.

The demands include an education policy, human resources development, expediting the on-going dialogue process with different armed forces of Northeast India for an early settlement, the illegal migration issue, comprehensive refugee policy, NRC for Northeast India, repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and withdrawal of the long-term visa as well.

The students’ organization also clarified that they would strongly oppose the proposed move to ratify the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 seeks to grant citizenship to refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan belonging to the Hindu, Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Sikh and Parsee communities. The bill seeks to amend India’s Citizenship Act, 1955.

Speaking to reporters, NESO Chairman Samuel B Jywra said, “Infiltration of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh is continuing unabated. We demand that the NRC should be implemented in all Northeast Indian states modelled on Assam.”

North East Students’Organization (NESO) is the apex body of all the students’ organization of Northeast India.
