Security agencies in Tripura seized drugs worth US$4,570 during the past six months in line with the government's mission to make Tripura a "drug free state.”
After assuming power, the BJP-IPFT led government has made a commitment to make Tripura a drug-free state. A total of 271 cases were registered and 253 people were arrested during the period.
Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had instructed different security agencies to deal with the illegal activities.
The seized drugs include 45,000 kg of dry cannabis, 17 million ganja plants, 88,000 bottles of cough syrup, 1.48 lakh habit-forming tablets, 2,626 grams of brown sugar and heroin in the state, officials of Tripura’s Revenue Department said.
According to them, the market value of these drugs would be around Rs.33 crore equal to US$4,570.
The codeine-laced cough syrup is mostly consumed in large quantities by youngsters in Bangladesh, said the officials.
As consumption of alcohol is prohibited in Bangladesh, smuggling of different brands of addictive cough syrup have been on the rise. Dhaka had earlier urged Delhi to ban the drug that is manufactured in India,” added the officials.
Since assumption of power in Tripura, the BJP-IPFT led government has made a commitment to make Tripura a drug-free state. Instructions have been given to different security agencies in the state under the aegis of Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who holds the Home portfolio as well.
Tripura Police, Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Border Security Force (BSF) and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have several times conducted raids separately to seize the drugs. These agencies have sometimes conducted joint raids. The raids were conducted mostly when the drugs were smuggled to Bangladesh.
