The final draft of the NRC list is set to be published on July 30
Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal chaired a high-level law and order review meeting at Guwahati on Thursday, to discuss security measures ahead of the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Assam’s Chief Secretary TY Das, Director General of Police (DGP) Kuladhar Saikia, Joint Secretary (North East) of the Union Home Ministry Satyendra Garg, National Register of Citizens (NRC) Coordinator Prateek Hajela, and all deputy commissioners and superintendents of Assam police were in attendance at the meeting, according to sources in the Assam Secretariat.
NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela said the final draft of the NRC list is set to be published on July 30.
He added that people could look for their names in the list through SMS, the NRC website or by visiting NRC seva kendras (local government offices).
Those excluded from the list face deportation, though they will be given the chance to file objections.
Hajela further said that the NRC was not being updated on the basis of caste, creed or religion, as had been alleged by certain quarters.
DGP Kuladhar Saikia said at the meeting that stern action would be taken against anyone who tried to create unrest over the NRC list.
Meanwhile, 220 companies of paramilitary troops have been deployed across Assam, to maintain security after the publishing of the NRC list.
