India’s Supreme Court, on Monday, extended its June 30 deadline to publish the final draft of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) to July 31. This follows an agreement, between the central government and the state NRC Coordinator Prateek Hajela, to publish it within the new time limit.
The earlier deadline could not be adhered to in the wake of flooding in the state. A bench of justices Ranjan Gogoi and RF Nariman considered the report of Hajela and extended the deadline.
Earlier, the Supreme Court said that the claims by citizens whose names do not feature in the draft Assam NRC – published on midnight of December 31 last year – will be scrutinized—and included in the subsequent list if verified.
