‘Finland will maintain pressure on Myanmar for sustainable return of Rohingyas’
The Finnish under-secretary of state has said Finland, along with the EU, will continue to maintain pressure on Myanmar for the sustainable return of Rohingyas, a press release issued by the foreign ministry said. Anne Sipilainen, Under-Secretary of State (Foreign and Security Policy) of the Finnish Foreign Affairs Ministry, met Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali on Thursday morning at the foreign ministry. She thanked the Bangladesh government and the country’s people for aiding the distressed Rohingya people, a press release said. Appreciating the support extended by Finland through the EU, AH Mahmood Ali urged that the international community increase pressure on Myanmar to ensure the safe and dignified return of forcefully displaced Myanmar nationals. The Finnish under-secretary of state assured him that Finland and the EU would do so. Anne Sipilainen thanked Bangladesh for its outstanding contribution in the UN, particularly in the areas of peacekeeping and climate change management. She expressed her interest in collaborating with Bangladesh in combating climate change as both the countries are vulnerable in this regard. Anne Sipilainen, on behalf of the Finnish Foreign Minister, invited Minister Mahmood Ali to visit Finland.
