Since August 25, more than 500,000 Rohingya have sought refuge in Bangladesh. Of those refugees 60% are children under 18, including hundreds without family members. These children need extra support to ensure their emotional wellbeing and also to prevent the risks they are exposed to.
With this in mind, Save the Children is establishing an additional 30 child-friendly spaces, with the support of UNICEF, to cater to the needs of children from newly arrived communities. Due to the large number of unaccompanied children, more child-friendly spaces are required, the agency stressed, reports a Save the Children press release.
According to UNICEF, there are almost 1,800 unaccompanied children reported till September 30, who were either separated from their parents or lost them in the violence.
Save the Children has been registering un-accompanied and separated children at both Kutupalong and Nayapara registered camps. As of October 2, 726 children have been identified at Kutupalong alone, among whom 409 are girls and 317 are boys.
The international aid agency is working to accommodate these distraught children in “Child-Friendly Spaces” located at Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar, where the children can be safe.
