Some 14 police officers have also been injured after pro-Trump rioters stormed the US Capitol

At least four people were killed and 52 others arrested after pro-Trump rioters breached the US Capitol building in Washington in hopes of thwarting President-elect Joe Biden's victory.

Washington DC Police Chief Robert Contee told USA Today that the chaotic day included four fatalities: a woman who was shot by the US Capitol Police, as well as three others — two men and one woman — who died in “separate medical emergencies.”

Police had made "in excess of 52 arrests," including 26 on US Capitol grounds, he told the news site.

“Two pipe bombs — one from the DNC and one from the RNC — were also recovered by police,” he was quoted by the report as confirming.

The chaos in the US Capitol on Wednesday unfolded after President Donald Trump spent weeks whipping up his supporters with false allegations of fraud in the November 3 election, culminating in a call to march to the building that represents US democracy.

Trump, who has refused to concede that he lost to Democratic President-elect Joe Biden, had urged his supporters multiple times to come to Washington for a rally on Wednesday, the day the US House of Representatives and Senate were scheduled to certify the results of the Electoral College.

They turned out in the thousands to hear the president say they should march on the Capitol building to express their anger at the voting process and to pressure their elected officials to reject the results.
