Retirees slam Trump on Covid-19, social division

The president has already lost many older voters who voted for him in 2016, say senior citizens

Retired voters of the United States of America have slammed President Donald Trump for failing to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, unite the country and ensure the social security and healthcare of senior citizens.

They also said the incumbent president has already lost the votes of many senior citizens who voted for him four years ago.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden will do a better job for them, the retired voters added.

Around a dozen senior citizens joined a virtual event titled “2020 US Presidential Election Reporting Seminar,” from Florida, a key battleground state for the election on November 3.

The East-West Center, a non-partisan US organization, is organizing the 14-day seminar from October 25 to November 7. Twelve journalists, including this correspondent, are participating in the event from across the globe.

The votes of the senior citizens were instrumental to Trump’s electoral college victory against Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton four years ago. However, the opinion polls are showing that the support for the incumbent among this age group has reduced significantly.

Joining the program, retirees accused the president of “lying constantly, being immoral, supporting the white supremacy and handling the economy badly.”

Donald Singer, who voted for the first time when John F Kennedy was the candidate, said: “The primary job of the president is to unite the country. Trump has failed to do so. He has torn apart the very fabric of our democracy.”

Accusing Trump of lying all the time, Lorraine Tuliano said: “We need a president who will speak the truth.”

She even doubted whether the US president had actually contracted Covid-19.

“He [Trump] did absolutely nothing to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. Every event [election rally] he held was super-spreader,” Ray Davis said, expressing his frustration for the president’s failure to take care of social security and healthcare.

Criticizing Trump for his handling of racial issues, Ken Goodfriend said: “Vile fear has been created among the non-whites during the Trump administration.”

Stuart Cohen said: “We are divided as a country.”

Even if Biden wins the presidency, it will take a long time to heal the division created by Trump, he added.

“It will take two years to be civil [with each other],” he further said.
