Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz has been suspected of gunning down at least 17 people on Valentine’s Day afternoon at a high school in the US’ Florida.
According to CNN
, Cruz is a former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where the attack took place. He was expelled for disciplinary reasons.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed the matter.
Police said Cruz was armed with at least one AR15 style rifle along with multiple magazines and that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have also found traces of .223 calibre bullets which were shot from the firearm.
Law enforcement sources believe the suspect sought a higher death toll that is why he pulled the school’s fire alarm to draw people out.
According to one of the students, a fire drill was conducted earlier in the day which led some to believe the afternoon alarm was another drill.
The student added that everyone around her was panicking at first; later, when they realized they were hearing “shots” being fired, they ran towards the canal for shelter.
Officials are currently examining Cruz's digital profile. As per Israel, it contains "very, very disturbing" content.
Israel confirmed, Cruz has been taken into custody without incident in nearby Coral Springs and investigators are currently talking to him.
