The 24-member Lebanese government announced  on Friday after a 13-month wait is headed by third-time Prime Minister Najib Mikati, but all other members are newcomers.

The cabinet could be short-lived as one of its declared main tasks will be to organize elections that would lead to a new government.

Herewith are penpix of some of the most notable and commented appointments:

Youssef Khalil

The new finance minister will be expected to take the lead in efforts to rescue Lebanon from its worst ever economic crisis.

As an economist who has worked at the Central Bank for almost three decades, critics are warning he is unlikely to take a tough line against his former employer, which is widely blamed for the country's bankruptcy.

Firass Abiad

Often praised for his efforts in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic as the head of Lebanon's largest public hospital, Abiad's appointment as health minister came as little surprise.

Abdallah Bou Habib

The new foreign minister served as Lebanon's ambassador to the United States in the 1980s and worked for many years as a senior official in the World Bank, one of the institutions whose assistance is vital to the country's recovery.

George Kordahi

Perhaps the best-known face in the new government team, star TV presenter George Kordahi was appointed information minister.

His years as the host of the Arabic version of the popular game show 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' made him a household name in the entire region.

Amin Salam

The young economy minister Amin Salam is little known in Lebanon and has been working mostly in the United States as an international affairs expert sometimes interviewed as a pundit on Arab-US economic relations.

Najla Riachi

A former diplomat who represented Lebanon at the United Nations, Najla Riachi takes over the administrative development portfolio in the new government, where she is the only woman.

One social media user pointed out that was one more woman than in the Taliban's newly unveiled cabinet in Afghanistan.
