One of the holy days for Muslims, Ashura is observed on the 10th day of Muharram, first month in the Islamic calendar, every year. Muslims, particularly the Shias, observe the day as a symbol of “sacrifice and mourning” with various religious rituals, recalling the martyrdom of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad’s grandson Hazrat Imam Hussain, his family members and 72 followers during the battle of Karbala on this day in the Hijri year of 61. To commemorate the day, every year, Shias bring out traditional procession known as Tazia in different areas of Bangladesh, including capital Dhaka. The community prepares for the procession and starts their remembrance rituals a few days before the 10th Muharram
