We want to play like this in the upcoming matches. I know, it will not be repeated in every match but we will try to perform like this

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza expressed his satisfaction as Tigers defeated South Africa by 21 runs in their opening game of the 2019 ICC cricket World Cup but admitted they need to perform consistently to be successful in the tournament.

A collective effort from the batsmen helped Bangladesh post 330 runs, which is the highest total in their ODI history, before the bowlers restricted the opponents for 309. .

The skipper expressed how content he is with the effort of his players, after the match.

“I am very happy with the team performance. We are basically a team where when each of us make some contributions, we win most of the time. I told our players yesterday that if we step up, we will have chance of winning. We were lucky and we also play good cricket,” skipper Mashrafe said during the post match press conference at the Oval on Sunday.

Mashrafe was especially happy as the Tigers showcased a good performance in English conditions and he said they will try to keep their form up.

“We have played really well particularly in English conditions. We can call this as one of our best performances. We want to play like this in the upcoming matches. I know, it will not be repeated in every match but we will try to perform like this,” he added.

At the same time, the skipper urged his players to keep their feet on the ground as only one match has been played and there are eight more matches left in the league stage.

“It’s important for all of us to stay normal after such a brilliant win. This is just another ODI win. We still have eight games left in the league stage. We have not qualified or in a strong position after just one win. The fans are really excited and thrilled after today’s win, but as players, we need to be calm and relaxed. We have won only one match and we still have a long way to go in this tournament.”

Bangladesh captain Mashrafe, while congratulating his players for playing well in the game, addressed the press saying: “I am very proud of Mushi [Mushfiqur Rahim], [Mehedi] Miraz and [Mahmudullah] Riyad. They are fasting, and played their best … (on Sunday)."

The captain also suggested that the key for success in this tournament is their performance against bigger teams.

“If we want to make an impact, we need to defeat big teams. The teams that are superior to us in the tournament are really superior. And when only a few teams are considered as weak in comparison, they are actually equal to us in terms of strength. I think we need to win those matches if we want to perform well in this tournament. We are nowhere after winning just one match. We have only achieved two points so far.  So, we have to make sure that we perform like this more consistently,” skipper said.

Mashrafe also believe that luck is also an important factor for winning tight matches and the team needs some fortune to pull of great victories.

“I also believe in luck. Everyone plan but not every time can you get success by just that. You need luck too. Only few deliveries turned in this match. And the most turning delivery gave us the wicket of Faf du Plessis. Nobody expected that much turn in this kind of wicket. That’s why you need luck sometimes. To perform well in this tournament, you need some luck along with good performance,” he concluded.

Bangladesh will play against New Zealand in their next match at the Oval on Wednesday.
