8 killed in road crashes across the country

At least 8 people were killed, and several others injured in separate road accidents in Bagerhat, Dhaka, and Habiganj on Saturday.

In Bagerhat, six people were killed, and 12 others injured when a bus crashed into a roadside tree around 9:45am on Saturday in Fakirhat upazila, said Abu Jihad Sheikh, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fakirhat police station.

Three of the deceased are Md Farhad Hossain, 46, from Rupsha upazila; Hekmat Biswas, 45, from Bagerhat Sadar upazila; and Kuddus Sarder, 60, from Kayra upazila.

Deputy Assistant Director of Bagerhat fire service, Masud Sarder, said the accident occurred when a bus crashed into a tree after its driver lost steering control, leaving five people dead on the spot.

The injured were first admitted to Fakirhat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared another individual dead. Later, the other injured were moved to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

"Some of the injured are still in critical condition," said the fire service officer.

Five units of the Bagerhat and Khulna fire service responded to the scene; while the bodies of the deceased were recovered by the police.

In Habiganj, a truck driver was killed in the afternoon, due to a head-on collision between two trucks on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Madhabpur upazila.

The deceased Shohag Miya, one of the truck drivers died on the spot, said Shaistaganj Highway police OC Liakat Ali.

The victim’s body was sent to Habiganj Sadar Modern Hospital morgue, he added.

In Dhaka, a woman died while eight others got injured after two vehicles collided head- on at Elephant road around 6:30am.

The doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) declared Fulbibi, 50—from Patuakhali—dead.

Confirming the accident, Inspector Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police outpost, said the injured were admitted to the hospital.

Kajol Rekha—one of the injured, and daughter in-law of Fulbibi said, they had come from Patuakhali to admit her ill father-in-law in Anwar Khan Modern Medical College, but then: "The accident occurred on our way from Sadarghat."
