One person has been killed after a bomb detonated inside a suspected militant den at Mymensingh’s Bhaluka upazila.
The explosion took place at Kashor in Habirbari union around 7pm on Sunday, Bhaluka Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mamunur Rashid told the Dhaka tribune.
“The victim could be a militant, but we are not sure yet. He’s yet to be identified,” he said.
The police officer also could not confirm whether the bomb was intentionally detonated or it was an accident. “We, however, suspect the blast occurred when the victim was making a bomb.”
Quoting witnesses, the OC said the wife and two children of the man were injured in the blast and fled the scene right after the explosion.
Mamunur added that the family had said they were from Sirajganj when they rented one of the 12 rooms in the semi-concrete house, owned by one Azim Uddin and situated on the west side of Master Bari in the union.
Police have detained Azim for questioning as he could not provide any information regarding his tenants.
The house, which is now empty, has been cordoned off, said Mymensingh’s Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Raihanul Islam.
ASP Raihanul said: “The victim’s wife and two children were inside the house when the blast happened, but they somehow managed to leave the house right after it.”
Bhaluka police Inspector Md Hazrat Ali told the Bangla Tribune the tenants of the house had moved in only two days ago.
“Building owner Azim could not even say the name of the man who died in the blast. He didn’t collect all the necessary information from the family before letting them move in. They had said they would give the necessary documents later,” he said.
Inspector Hazrat added that they were waiting for the bomb disposal unit from Dhaka to reach the scene before entering the house. “There could be more bombs inside. We’ll continue the operation once they arrive.”
“The body is still inside the house. Both wrists of the suspected militant have been blown off in the blast,” he added.
