“A Diamond is Forever”
Whether it is proposal day, engagement day, wedding day, Valentine's Day or Christmas – nothing makes the occasion more classy than diamonds. But what makes this sparkly, dazzling, captivating, charming, tiny piece of stone so special that makes us dream of one, or two or even a dozen? People say, diamonds are forever, it's not because they are indestructible, but because our obsession for them is. Here are some fabulous facts about diamonds that you probably never knew.

History

Diamonds were formed 3 billion years ago, in the deepest core of Earth. The first diamond was seen in India around 2500BC but the cutting was established as an industry in 1330 in Venice, Rome. In the Dark ages, diamonds used to get high regard for their medical power to heal wounds and cure ailments when digested by a sick person. The tradition of wearing an engagement ring on the left hand's fourth finger originated in Egypt, because they believed a person's “vein of love” ran directly from the heart to that finger. The largest diamond ever discovered weighed 3106 carats.

The 4 CS

Carat is the diamond's physical weight measured in metric carats. One carat is equivalent to 1/5 gram and is subdivided into 100 points. On average a diamond will lose about 50% of its original weight when it is cut and polished. Cut has the greatest effect on a diamonds beauty. The more precise the cut, the more captivating the diamond is to the eye. Diamonds can materialize in many hues. From colorless to light yellow or light brown, but the colorless diamonds are the rarest. Diamond's clarity determines the quality of the stone as it develop small inclusions and imperfections inside.

Few famous diamonds

Koh-i-Noor is a white diamond weighing 108.93 carats; the name of this diamond means “Mountain of Light”. Currently it is set in Queen Elizabeth's crown. It is the largest of all famous diamonds. It was previously owned by the Rajahs of Malwa and in the sixteenth century by the Mogul Sultam Babur. The Hope Diamond is a fancy dark grayish blue diamond weighing 45. 52 carats. It was found in India (1642) but later it was stolen and was set in the royal crown of Luis the 14th. The Incomparable Diamond was discovered by a young girl in 1989. After cuts the experts created a beautiful yellow-brown stone weighing 407.48 carats. The Cullinan Diamond is the largest diamond in the world, weighing 3106.75 carats. It was discovered by a mining superintendent in South Africa back in 1905. It was given as a gift to the King Edward VII.

Fun facts

Diamonds are known as symbols of strength, courage and invincibility. The word “diamond” comes from the Greek word “adamas”; it means “unconquerable and indestructible.” The ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were splinters of stars that has fallen to the earth. It is said that Cupid's arrows have diamond tips. A rough diamond looks so similar to a pebble that most people will pass it by without even noticing it.
